What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is a traditional Indian healing art. It is the oldest surviving health system. The word Ayurveda comes from Sanskrit and refers to the science of long and healthy life, life wisdom or life science. Ayurveda is a combination of practical experience and philosophy that focuses on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects that are important to human health and disease. This makes Ayurveda a holistic system; for body, mind and soul.
Ayurveda shows us how we can preserve our health, energy and enthusiasm for life into old age.
The three principles of life
In the typology of Ayurveda one speaks of three different life energies, the so-called Doshas
- Vata (wind, air and ether), the principle of movement
- Pitta (Feuer und Wasser), das Feuer- bzw. Stoffwechselprinzip
- Kapha (earth and water), the structural principle
Ayurvedic conception says that these 3 Doshas occur in every organism. In a healthy organism, these “energies” should be in a harmonious balance. In general, there are one or two generally prevailing Doshas in each individual. More rarely all three Doshas are equally pronounced. The Ayurvedic treatments, methods and products bring the Doshas back to the same level since imbalances can cause dysfunction both physically and psychologically.
